George Town is a large town in north-east Tasmania app. 50 kilometres north of Launceston on the eastern bank of the mouth of the Tamar River. The Australian Bureau of Statistics records the George Town Municipal Area had a population of under 7000 persons as at 2016. Visitors to George Town can stay in their fully self-contained caravan or motorhome in George Town (close to Low Head Caravan Park) for $12 per night, payable to the local Visitor Information Centre where the stop is located. The maximum stay at this location is 1-night, and bookings must be made in advance. Access to a dump point and potable water are included with this rate of $12. George Town has supermarkets, takeaway food, fuel and has a range of specialty stores including a local hotel, cafes, chemist and supermarket. George Town is the regional centre of the George Town Council local government area and has a regional hospital.
